"Why do you think vampires are so popular?"
"Media," she said. "Most media portrays vampires as gorgeous, wealthy, sensual beings. They usually skip over their violent, bloody, murderous side."
"You don't believe they can be loving and kind?" he asked, closing his book.
"Maybe. If it suits them, but they are what they are."
"Do you think they're really ugly underneath the glamour?"
"Beats me," she said, closing her book as well. "Why?"
"I don't know. It seems like vampires, werewolves and fairies are getting a lot of press lately."
"So is magic. I think it's just one more way for everyone to escape being here."
"You mean life?"
"Yes," she said. "They are all a fantasy people can make into anything they like without getting hurt. What do you think it is?"
"I think we are being setting up to accept that they want to live with us."
"You mean as a food source?" she asked.
"I believe they're already here. They've been here all along."
"Are they that good at hiding?" she asked.
"I think the cover up protecting them is that good."
"Who would do that?"
"Oh, come on," he said. "Our government is one big lie machine."
"What's payoff?"
"No idea, but there is one."
"I don't think werewolves would be a bad thing," she said. "As for fairies, one has to be very carful when dealing with them."
"I think we know a vampire," he said, looking at his hands."
"You mean James?"
He nodded.
"He's just pale. A lot of people are pale."
"He never eats, he just pushes the food around on his plate, or tells us he already had dinner. He never comes to the beach with us and..."
"That doesn't make him a vampire."
"You're probably right," he sighed. "It's just that..."
"He is a bit strange at times."
"Even if he was a vampire would it matter?"
"Not to me," she said.
"Nor to me."
"Maybe we should just ask him."
"Oh, right," he laughed. "Hey, James, are you a creature of the night?"
"Well, when you say it like that..." she said. "I'm going to call him."
"No. Don't do that. He'll think your insane."
"Hey, James, it's me. I was wondering if you knew any vampires, or if you are one yourself. Hh huh. Mmmm. Uh huh. I see. No, no, it doesn't matter at all and of course, we're still on for tonight. Seven thirty is perfect. See you then, Kisses on you."
"What did he say?"
"He's a vampire and he has vampire friends. He said it's not a big deal and he'll tell us more tonight."
"Seriously?"
"I guess. Hey, everyone has their quirks."
"But everyone isn't DEAD and still walking around," he said.
"Think of it as a health condition. Lots of people have health conditions."
"How can you be so..."
"Accepting?" she asked.
"Yes."
"He's been our friend forever. I love him and so do you."
"That's true," he agreed.
"He's just James."
"James, with a condition," he snickered.
"He also said they are everywhere and always have been, so I guess you were right."
"Did he say anything about me?" he asked, softly.
"No. Why would he?"
"Just wondering."
