From a Christian perspective, happiness is often seen as a feeling that is based on circumstances or external events. It is temporary and can change based on the situation one is in. On the other hand, joy is considered to be a deeper and more enduring state of being that comes from within, often rooted in one's faith and relationship with God. Joy is seen as a spiritual gift and is not dependent on external circumstances, but rather on an inner sense of peace and contentment that comes from knowing and trusting in God's love and promises.
Happiness depends on what happens; joy does not. Remember, Jesus Christ had joy, and He prays "that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves."
Joy is primarily intrinsically based. It living inside-out. It is rooted from an eternal mindset based upon scriptures like Romans 8:28.
Happiness on the other hand is externally motivated and is outside-in.
