Are you the type of person who is leery of pushing buttons on your machine? Are you wondering, what does this button do? In many Janome machines, such as the Janome Skyline S9, the "T-Shirt " icon is the Sewing Applications Menu, which is a treasure trove of information setting you up for success.
Sewing Applications is basically the machine asking you, "What would you like to do?" Would you like to hem a pair of pants, or a shirt, install a zipper, or do some type of quilting? If so, the Sewing Applications Menu is your best friend with all the answers making the task faster and easier with more professional results.
Click the T-Shirt icon to be taken to the next two screens, each with six sewing applications from which to choose. The upper left hand corner shows you there are 2 pages. To get to the second page click on the arrow at the bottom right to reveal the second page with the last six sewing applications.
The great thing about using these applications is that once you choose a category, it will guide you with which presser foot to use, automatically sets the suggested ideal stitch length, width, thread tension and more!
The Janome Skyline S9 has the following Sewing Applications built in: Seaming, Overedge, Blind Hem and Shell Tuck, Rolled Hem, Gathering, Button Sewing, Tacking, Appliqué, Patchwork and Quilting. Within the individual categories, you will find even more selections!
Want to try some Free Motion Quilting? After pressing that icon, look at all the further preset selections you can choose! The Sewing Applications Menu is a sewing reference catalogue right at your fingertips!
By choosing Free Motion Quilting, you will receive a prompt on the LCD screen to lower the feed dogs. This is a great feature since each application is unique and advises you what to do in order to achieve success. There will also be a picture of the suggested presser foot you need to use for each application, so there's no guesswork.
Applique is another popular Sewing Application built into the Janome Skyline S9.
The Appliqué Icon will give you two pages of various preset stitch selections from which to choose, each which can still be modified as desired. You still have complete creative control!
The "M" stands for middle needle position, the "R" stands for right needle position. The machine suggests using the Janome Satin Stitch Foot (F), which is included with the machines, but, available from your Janome dealer is the dedicated specialty Janome Applique Foot (AP) which is a great little foot to use because it's small foot print, and smooth curved "toe". This is especially useful around dimensional applique.

An extra-special feature built into the Janome Skyline S9, and a few other high-end machines is the additional Specialty Presser Foot Sewing Applications Menu, which is the + Presser Foot icon. This menu features applications of many optional Janome specialty presser feet like the Wide and Narrow Pin Tucking Foot, Wide and Narrow Beading Foot, Free Motion Couching Foot Set, the Ribbon/Sequin Foot, Piping Foot and 3-Way Cording Foot.
All of these specialty presser feet allow you to get more from your machine and readily available from your Janome dealer. There are demos of these presser feet, and more, on the Janome HQ YouTube Channel and be sure to check out previous Janome Life blogs for more tips and tricks!
Another great resource to learn more about many Janome presser feet, attachments and accessories is the Janome Presser Foot Workbook and the various addendums, which are filled with helpful tips and tricks and exercises to help you learn more about what these specialty presser feet and accessories can do for you! They take your sewing to the next level and are sew fun to use!
Don't forget that the Janome Skyline S9 can do sew much more than all these sewing applications! It's an embroidery machine, too, so increases it's versatility and creative possibilities. See your Janome dealer for a test drive!
Happy Sewing and Quilting!
