On China And Deadly Pacific Heatwaves…

Koushik Das

June 2

Researchers from Ocean University of China have claimed that their country is creating heatwaves over the Pacific Ocean! In their research paper, they have also claimed that the Chinese activities could change the Earth's climate in the coming days.

Researchers have explained that Beijing recently took various measures to reduce aerosol emissions and these steps could be responsible for Global Warming. Aerosol is a suspension of fine solid or liquid particles, such as smoke, fog or mist, in gas. Aerosols are often created by burning fossil fuels, biomass or due to industrial processes and volcanic eruptions. The environmental scientists blame aerosols for air pollution. The Chinese researchers have blasted policies of their Government for the increase in the temperature of a certain part of the Pacific Ocean.

Researchers of the Chinese University recently conducted a study in which they expressed serious concern over steps taken by Beijing to reduce aerosol emissions, stating that the Government policies to curb air pollution could lead to Global Warming. According to researchers, China's efforts to curb air pollution unintentionally increased temperatures in the northeastern region of the Pacific Ocean from 2010 to 2020. As per their observation, the temperature of the region stretching nearly a thousand miles from the Bering Strait to the Gulf of Alaska increased by 1.8 Degrees Fahrenheit in those 10 years. As a result, several incidents, such as the death of various types of fishes and the mysterious disappearance of whales, have taken place in that particular region.

The researchers followed two approaches to find whether the reduction in aerosol emissions was one of the reasons for the increase in temperature. They first selected some areas where aerosol emissions are normal. In those places, no changes in temperature were observed. However, there has been an increase in temperature where aerosol emissions have been reduced forcefully. The presence of aerosol particles in the air blocks various rays coming from space or sunlight. Celestial rays and sunlight are reflected by these aerosol particles. Researchers are of the opinion that the reflection phenomenon acts as mirrors in the air and different celestial rays or sunlight cannot affect the Earth due to the reflection.

The researchers from China have opined that the problem caused by reduced aerosols mainly affects ocean temperatures and marine life. This problem may also have triggered drought in California (in 2013-16)! At the same time, researchers have claimed that unlimited aerosol emissions may cause great danger in the future. Meanwhile, NASA has mentioned in a report that increased levels of aerosols in the air could cause eight million premature deaths worldwide, annually! Tiny aerosol particles, like sulphates and nitrates, are emitted during fossil fuel combustion which can cause diseases, like asthma, respiratory problems, lung cancer, heart problem, etc.

The Chinese University researchers have stressed that they highlighted the need to consider what risks could be caused by reducing aerosol emissions in their latest study. They have also stressed on the effects of reduction of aerosol emissions on Climate Change. Researchers have urged the Government of China to reassess its policies, apart from taking necessary steps in order to protect the environment.
