"No, Jerry," she said. "Parallel lives do not look like that picture. That's what you see in an infinity mirror. Parallel lives are regular lives with you in each one of, playing a different role. I mean it could be the same role, with different people, or the same people but different circumstances, and you don't know you're playing, or living in multiple lives. You could be anyone at all."
""Why would we want to do that?"
"Beats me. Boredom, maybe."
"I'm thinking insanity," he said.
"I can't argue with that."
"How can I get to one of those lives?"
"Dreams are the easiest way. In fact I think we are together in another one and we're getting divorced because you love someone else."
"I would never do that."
"Not in this lifetime, but you did do it in another one. You don't feel anything for me."
"I'm sorry."
She laughed. "That's why I'm sometimes angry with you when I wake up. But I'm better now, in that lifetime. I've a adjusted. Still, it's hard because I'm seeing THAT lifetime with a brain in THIS lifetime, where we love each other. I keep wondering what happened. How you could feel so empty toward me?"
He put his arm around her. "Probably better if we let them work it out themselves, don't you think? Maybe that's why we aren't supposed to visit ourselves."
"Good point. One lifetime at a time, right?"
"You're not the only one," he said. "A guy at work said his wife woke up and started hitting him with her pillow, saying that he had another woman and how could he do such a thing."
"He doesn't have anyone else, does he?"
"No. He's crazy about his wife."
"I don't think men dream those things, or visit those kinds of lifetimes. What do you dream about?"
"Uh..."
"Just tell me."
"Fishing?"
"You've never fished a day in your entire life. You like fish."
"That's why it's so weird. There's this boat and...the captain is a tall red head and her name is..."
"Wait," she laughed. "Let's just do what you said and let all of our different selves work things out things by themselves."
"That works for me," he said, turning out the light. "Sweet dreams."
