I'm obsessed with making zipper bags. Big zipper bags, little zipper bags; bags that look pretty, and especially bags that organize things!
Janome Skyline S9 - embroidery/ sewing combo machine
I am constantly misplacing my pens and pencils and when I saw this little In The Hoop pattern for a pen case that attached to your notebook, I knew I absolutely had to make one - or several!
In The Hoop (ITH) patterns are generally something you can complete, or almost complete entirely using an embroidery machine. The possibilities for ITH designs are endless, especially if you have embroidery digitizing software like Artistic Digitizer which allows to create your own ITH projects. I've made bags, stuffed animals, name tags, luggage tags, and more!
This pattern only requires a tiny bit of sewing at the very end, but the ability to quickly go from embroidery to sewing on my Janome Skyline S9 makes projects like this sew fun to do!
Janome Skyline S9
This perky purple fabric has been sitting in my stash for a while and was perfect for this project.
It's so easy to quickly set up everything to go using the wireless feature on my Janome Skyline S9 and the FREE Janome Apps, which are available for Apple and Android devices. For this project, I used the Janome AcuEdit app to import the JEF (Janome Embroidery File) design file and size accordingly.
Even tricky sewing applications like installing a zipper can be done IN the embroidery hoop!
This design tacks down the zipper first, then assembles the side pieces. I absolutely love the precision of ITH designs!
Once one side is done, the back piece is placed right side down. I used a little low tack Painters Tape to hold everything in place so nothing shifted in the process of stitching.
This design also included a piece of fabric placed on the backside of the hoop, under the stabilizer. That was a new one for me. The tear-away stabilizer is removed right at the end when everything is turned right side out.
The first time you use an ITH design, it can be a little tricky to know the order of how everything is placed in the hoop, but once you go through it one time, everything becomes quicker and you can make these designs even quicker than you might on your sewing machine! They are sew much fun and really become addictive.
Now I have no excuses for misplacing my pens!
Have you made any In The Hoop designs? There are a few ITH projects built into the Janome MC550E/ELE and the Janome CM17 to help get you started. Watch these videos on the Janome HQ You Tube channel to see how quickly and easily they stitch out, and how fun they are to create!
What's your favourite reason for making bags? Do you usually have a specific purpose for them once made, or, do you make them just because you like the look of them, then figure out a use for them?
