Love, Relationships And Lifestyle In 2024!
Life Update #1: I Quit My Job
This probably has to be the dumbest and bravest thing I did this year. For someone who was out of jobs for a while and finally found something after rounding up my Masters, it should be a no-brainer to stay with the job I got. But nah, I did the most Gen Z thing I could do. I'll highlight my reasons here because it is a life update and also, so you can pick whatever lessons (if any) make sense to you.
First, I left because I didn't find it challenging. I happen to be the most easily lethargic person I know, so to keep myself working, I get myself involved in things I find challenging. Not to feed my ego, but so I can ensure that I keep learning, picking up new things and getting myself engaged. Let me add that this is a flimsy reason for leaving a job, especially in Tinubu's economy, however, staying at a job that I knew I would not have gained so much value or skill development from, just made me very uncomfortable.
Secondly, I hate to be that guy but among the things that matter in work productivity is a healthy work environment. Hence, staying at a job where co-workers are mistreated, while you constantly save face means that you have yours coming and earlier than you think. Selah.
So if you can afford to leave an unhealthy work environment, you should not for any reason, think twice. But make sure that you have something doing or you have stayed there a while, so you don't have an unserious looking CV.
Life Update #2: I Sat In A Session Hosted By One Of My Industry Faves
Quick backstory.
I studied Dramatic Arts in the university and Arts of the Theatre for my Masters. They're different, but that is not the point. I always wanted to be an actor. It was my life's dream for a while, and still a very strong interest. I happen to lean more into screenwriting now anyway. I'm heading somewhere, stay with me, please.
For my final year project, we did The Wives by Ahmed Yerima, which happens to be one of my all time favourite plays. Some people think the first part of Chief Daddy is patterned after it. Around the same time we were to do the play for my project, another one was in the works in Lagos! Guess who the director and actor playing the same role I was playing was? Kemi Lala Akindoju!
Boy, was I elated and wished with all my heart that I could be a part of the production. Or at the very least, meet her someday.
The day came when Celebration Church International held an edition of the Algorithm Conference for creatives in January and I knew I had to be there because Kemi Lala Akindoju was going to be a speaker! It was going to be the time of my life! I would finally get a chance to meet her and introduce myself. Or so I thought.
Ordinarily, this should be heartbreaking, but it is just about the most refreshing things. Lala spoke on a wide range of topics, including the importance of being excellent, service and applying one's self adequately. However, what stood out to me the most was how to get yourself into the creative space, be relevant and appreciated.
See usually, we have everything we want to gain from the next influential person we meet. Everyone already has their elevator pitch for when they meet Mansa Musa or King Solomon, however, you need to find what you bring to the table. What special thing can you offer to these people of value that would not just make a difference, but leave a mark on them.
More than what you would gain from them or the profits you think you can bring to them, you should let these special people see you as valuable, different and not just the average person who wants to feed off what they have. Rather than "I would love an opportunity to work with you", approach with "in what capacity can I be of help to you?" Or don't even ask. Just do. Make sure it is something worth appreciating though.
And so this is why I put aside my wish to see my absolute favourite, but decided to add more value to myself first. Someday, hopefully, I get to meet and work with her. However, the gems she dropped at the conference were just what I needed to influence my next career steps.
Life Update #3: I Started A Screenwriting Course
I feel like I am always in one school or the other. Almost like I'm rushing to study everything and get it all done before 30. Maybe I am, maybe I'm not.
Drawing from the previous life updates, this is where they landed me - well kind of.
I actually quit my job, out of many reasons, because I was going to start a new course in screenwriting that I knew was exactly what I needed and what God will have me do at this time. It seemed like a silly decision at the time, but I just knew it was the step to take. It was confirmed at Kemi Lala's session and I knew that if I was to thrive in the creative space, I need to get myself into spaces with more creatives, learn from the top actors in the space and forge out a better version of myself.
This, my friends, led me to enrol in an intensive screenwriting class that has formed the most exciting experience for me in years. I have the absolute best teacher and I may have even formed a strong tribe with my classmates.
I'd love to go into more details, but I am more excited to see what the future holds as regards film and screenwriting. One thing I know is that I do feel very fulfilled being here and starting out 2024 this way.
