We love to talk about the myriad features on a given machine, and for good reason – having a lot of specialty stitches and functions can make things easier. Sometimes though, the basics are best, and in sewing, that means the straight stitch. It's what started the home sewing machine revolution in the mid 1800s. No more tedious hand stitching; sewing projects could be completed more quickly and precisely. At the base level of any project, a perfect, reliable straight stitch is still the gold standard on which everything else is built.
With this in mind, we took a new look for the New Year at the Janome HD9 Professional, a dedicated straight stitch sewing machine. It's an extremely heavy duty model with cast aluminum construction and eight enclosed ball bearings; providing smooth, stable operation at speeds of up to 1,600 SPM. It also comes in a black edition, which includes the extension table in the box.
Why have a specialty model in your sewing space?
S4H has a large library of free home décor projects. For many sewists, this time of year is when we look at our surroundings and think about ways to update and improve their look and feel. New curtains, upholstery projects, cushions, and extra large fabric baskets and bins may all be on your Must Make List for 2024. Having an industrial level machine that can tackle thicker layers and larger swaths of fabric makes construction faster and more precise.
Heavy weight threads, often called for in larger home décor projects, are not a problem with the HD9's Heavy Weight Thread Guide (HWTG). It produces beautiful seams and topstitching when using heavy weight threads on denim, canvas, even leather.
One of our favorite things: thread cutting options
Many Janome models offer an Automatic Thread Cutter, but having it on a high speed, straight stitch machine like the HD9 is especially important, because you really do not want to stop and cut threads when you're stitching long and/or layered seams. Not only does the HD9 have an easy-access thread cutter button on the front of the machine, you can also plug in an optional foot pedal to allow remote thread cutting with a tap of the toe.
A bigger bobbin - yes!
Longer seams are par for the course with many home décor projects, which means more thread is eaten up as you speed along with your beautiful HD9 straight-stitched seams. It also means you need more bobbin thread, and the HD9 has you covered. Save time and keep on sewing with the easy access, side-loading bobbin that holds 1.4x more thread than a standard plastic bobbin.
A classic in the Janome line
The need for power and speed to tackle any quilting or heavy weight fabric project never diminishes, and the HD9 Professional has been a proven classic in the Janome line for many years. Its benefits are simple and straight forward (yes - pun intended!) because that is exactly what you need and want in a high-speed, straight stitch machine.
