Be Still . . .

"We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away."
(Hebrews 2:1 (NIV))
A new year and a new beginning brings new hope, but it also brings the option for something that squashes hope and faith. The best of intentions can find themselves overshadowed by the smallest, unexpected instance. All that it takes is an unpreparedness. A single, small instance can escalate and lead to things getting out of hand.
Just like a gentle ripple in the water, it usually starts small!
If you are in a boat and it is not firmly anchored, each gentle ripple will cause you to drift further and further away. Eventually, you will find yourself wondering what happened. You will find yourself far away from where you thought you were, from where you intended to be.
Just as a little ripple in the water will start to move a boat if it is not firmly anchored, a little sin will start to move a life if that life is not firmly anchored. It is usually something that someone thinks is insignificant that is the catalyst that brings on more!
I realize that we are all sinners in need of a Savior, and that no one is perfect, but it takes a constant presence in God's Word, and a constant fellowship with others who are also in God's Word, to be firmly anchored in such a way that the smallest things do not turn into major problems. We are to hold ourselves and each other to the standard that Jesus has set for us. We should know God's Word so well that we instantly recognize small ripples that can cause us to drift away!
The last several years have seen things happen in this world that I would have never imagined happening. I am not going to go into details, for I believe that each of us recognize the events that have transpired that only twenty or thirty years ago would have been subjects of fiction. No one knows for certain what the new year will bring, but based on the ever increasing frequency of events, the ever increasing magnitude of events, and the ever increasing lack of common sense, things will get much worse.
Keep your mind filled with God's Word.
Keep your heart set on things from above.
Keep your eyes on Jesus!
He is our firm foundation. He is our safe tower. Jesus is our anchor.
Are you firmly anchored?
