It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. In other words, it has secured its place in the middle of the ocean. This is how Pitcairn, one of the most isolated islands in the world, exists. One can live a quiet and peaceful life on this island.
There are four islands made of volcanic rock in the South Pacific Ocean… Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno. These four islands are scattered across several hundred kilometres of ocean and have a combined land area of about 47sqkm. Although Henderson Island accounts for 86% of the land area, only Pitcairn Island is inhabited. Pitcairn Island also attracts tourists from different parts of the globe mainly because of its scenic beauty. Thousands flock to this island every year.
Adamstown, a tiny village, is the capital of Pitcairn Island. According to data prepared in January 2020, only 47 people live permanently in Adamstown. The distance between Adamstown and South America's coast is 5,500km. Tahiti Island is situated near Adamstown, as the distance between the two islands is 2,150km. There is no airport in Adamstown! Hence, one can reach Pitcairn Island only by boat. Every three months, a ship comes to this island with food items and other products, and the islanders depend solely on these products for their survival.
The concerned authorities built a prison on Pitcairn Island in a rare first in 2004 because of increasing crime rates. With criminals getting released early, there is no need for prison. Hence, the authorities recently converted the prison into a hotel.
Pitcairn Island is under the rule of the British Government. The majority of residents are involved in farming on this island. Although television, satellite internet connection and telephone service are there on Pitcairn, the main means of communication is ham radio.
The history of Pitcairn Island, too, is significant. A group of British Naval soldiers, stationed on Tahiti Island, declared mutiny in 1789 and took possession of a British naval ship soon after it anchored there. However, they did not stay on Tahiti Island for long. The rebels moved to Pitcairn Island in order to escape punishment from the British administration. Since then, people have inhabited that island.
The natural beauty of Pitcairn Island can mesmerise anybody. One can find greeneries surrounded by blue waters there. In other words, Pitcairn Island is just like a paradise.
