The first time I came across this restaurant was via someone's feed and as a big fan of Dakgalbi, I was pretty excited to try out the food during my next visit to Seoul
Located in a small alley within the Hongdae district where many young Seoulites hang out for drinks, shopping and karaoke. We were walking around in circles as the restaurant was in an alley past a huge night-drinking establishment where their customers crowd the entire street blocking the entrance to the alley. To make it easy, I will include the Google pin below
The interiors of the restaurant are simple and youthful since they are located in the Hongdae area. Each table comes fitted with a huge stove which is used for serving the Dakgalbi
We were first served onion pancakes which were part of the service as we did not order this. I guess this also helps to heat up the pan to prepare for the Dakgalbi itself. It takes a while for the staff to cook the pancake as the huge pan needs time to heat up but once done, the pancake was light and crispy with a savoury batter
There are only 2 versions of the Dakgalbi dish; one without cheese and another with cheese. The price difference is KRW 2,000. We ordered the one with cheese fondue at KRW 15,000 and you can choose your spicy level between mild, medium, spicy and very spicy. You can also order additional fried rice which is cooked in the pan when you have finished the chicken dish using the remaining sauce. There are sides like flying fish roe and more snow cheese which can be ordered to be added to the fried rice. Our cheese fondue version came with 2 different types of cheese; mozzarella and nacho to give the dish an extremely cheesy flavour. The additional fried rice we ordered also had additional cheese snow toppings so our whole pan was filled with cheesy goodness
Overall, the Dakgalbi was really nice as the chicken was tender and the cheese gave it an additional layer of flavour. The whole dish is quite filling and heavy due to the amount of cheese we added since we all loved cheese. We shared this amongst 3 people and we almost finished it if we had more time to sit and chat. As the restaurant was closing and we had just small portions left, we left without finishing. Comparing this Dakgalbi to the traditional ones at Nami island, the style is quite different in flavour. This is a modernised version and more spicy whereas the one at Chuncheon was sweeter but both are equally nice
