Comme des Garçons bagged up with Freitag
As bag collaborations go, this is a little unexpected. Comme des Garçons has partnered with Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and compatriot Porter, but they have never worked with Zurich-based brand Freitag known, for their use of truck 'tarp' (tarpaulin) to make their easy-on-the-eye bags. As this pieces are fashioned from available fabric, they are believed to be one-of-a-kind, which appeal to those who desire uniqueness minus a prohibitive price. Freitag bags are sturdy too, which enhances their attractiveness. While supposedly popular here and is available through 12 points of sale, Freitag is, perhaps, very much associated with the multi-label store Actually (now at Orchard@313), where the bags had been sold for as long as we can remember. According to a 2020 report in The Straits Times, Freitag has no plans to open a street-side store on our island, citing the weather here being "too hot" and would "deter customers from walking down open-air streets".
But would anyone be discouraged by the heat to walk into Dover Street Market on often sun-baked Demsey Road, where the collaborative bags are expected to debut this month? Probably not. Comme des Garçons is no stranger to collaborations. And, often times, what they put out with other brands sell out quickly. We aren't surprised by CDG choosing to collaborate with Freitag. The bag brand's penchant for colour-blocking is very much up CDG's lively tori. But perhaps what's a tad unexpected is how the Freitag aesthetic seems more dominant than CDG's fiercely avant-garde leaning. Moreover, there is, based on the sole photograph released so far, no discernible surprise in the interpretation of the bags. For the Freitag fan, this collab may not mean anything. For the CDG die-hard, it may not be enough.
It is not known when CDG will release the bag here. Check back for more information. Photo: Comme des Garçons/Freitag
