Working Thanksgiving Week(end)

Hey Everyone!

While many Americans were enjoying a long Thanksgiving weekend, I only had Thanksgiving day off. I worked Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and it was all straight pay. The grocery store I work at closed for Thanksgiving but was open every other day.

Even though working at a grocery store isn't ideal and is still retail, I am glad that I am not at the company I was before I went to the company I am at. Black Friday, where I used to work, was always a zoo. Black Friday at a grocery store was slow. I was able to finish auditing the freezer aisle, which got the main part of the grocery department done before I run my department alone for a month. My Boss left a little early on Friday, so it was just me, my last hour and a half.

Friday, in that last little bit of a lull before I left for the day, I got into a conversation with one of my coworkers and got to know her a bit better. It's times like that, where I can spend time getting to know people one on one or in very small groups that I enjoy. I am not a huge people person (being an introvert and all), but the times I do get that individual or small group interaction, it's really good.

There have definitely been a lot of moments over the past couple of months where I have realized that my job is just that. There is no long-term career, purpose, or drive there. If I left tomorrow, it would continue on, and I would be replaced, and I am not really making a difference in anyone's life. If I stayed, I would cap out pay wise in about 2.5 years, and for what?

Working at a grocery store has been a full-time paycheck and health insurance when I have really needed it, but it's not what I am passionate about, and it's not a long-term thing. I'm at the point of my one year in my current role that pretty much aligns with the 2.5 year mark of me being with the company, and i am ready for a change.

I am also hoping I have more answers by then about what is going on with me healthwise and I can go into another stretch of maintaining the status quo and not have to be going to all these medical appointments like I have been since July.

Friday, like I said, I had been auditing the freezer aisle, so I brought all the layers to stay warm. My freezer auditing clothes are the same ones I wore every night as a freight lead. My last store, where I was a freight lead, was always freezing cold overnight, so I was always layered. Babzies and I call the look my "tells me you've worked freight without telling me you've worked freight" look. He had walked down that aisle as I was nearing the end of auditing, and all he said was, "Tell me, you've worked freight" we both laughed, and I was like, "You know it".

Last week, I helped sign, tag, and hang wreaths. Yesterday I walked into the back and was like, "Why does it smell like Christmas in here?"

This is why it smelled like Christmas when I walked into work. Little 2 - 3 foot noble firs.
