Janome Presser Foot Spotlight – Satin Stitch Foot F & F2

Do you have a favourite foot for your Janome Sewing Machine? I have many, but today I will sing the praises of the Janome Satin Stitch Foot and why it is the bestest (yes, I promise that is a word, lol!) To me, it's everything you need in a foot. My only complaint is it hasn't taken a turn providing snacks during sewing sessions, lol! Here is an overview of my favourite features of it and why I think it should be your favourite too.

Formats:

I like to think since this is my favourite foot Janome decided to make 2 versions of it. It is all about me right? Joking! This foot is used a lot for decorative stitches as there's a channel underneath for those dense stitches to from and pass under the foot. There are times where you will want full visibility and other times where you will want to make sure your project is laying flat. So, the Janome Satin Stitch Foot (F) comes in a Closed Toe, Part Number for 9mm: 859806011 and an Open Toe version (F2) Part Number for 9mm: 859813000, and yes, both feet are available for 5mm and 7mm machines, as well. Click on the link above for those part numbers.

You can use the best version, Closed Toe or Open Toe, for your project. Most of the time I use the Closed Toe version when stitching decorative stitches as I want those dense stitches to lay flat, but, when I'm appliquéing, I switch to the Open Toe for improved visibility.

Visibility:

The Janome Satin Stitch Foot is clear! I LOVE being able to see everything when I sew. This lets me make sure things are lining up and it is stitching properly.

Markings:

Both the Open Toe (F2) and Closed Toe Satin Stitch Foot (F) have the centre of the foot marked. On the Closed Toe (F), the marking is in a Janome red and on the Open Toe (F2), there is a clear vertical line in the middle. When stitching out decorative stitches or appliquéing it is very important to keep your stitches lined up. These markings help.

Each foot has nice straight sides with "toes" which are of equal width. This means you can use either the right or left side of the foot as a guide to keep your stitches lined up. Did you know on the Janome Closed Toe Satin Stitch Foot (F) the closed part of the "toe" (piece right in front of the needle) is 1/4" from the needle? This means you can use it as a reference point if you need to stop sewing a quarter inch before the end of a piece. I'm looking at you, "Y" seams.

You can also use the Janome Closed Toe Satin Stitch Foot (F) for a thread wrapped rolled hem. You can trim the "whiskers" off afterward if needed, depending how the fabric may ravel.

When you line up the fabric with the little slit and use a zigzag stitch, which will have the left swing of the needle into the fabric and the right swing off the fabric edge, magic happens! This is a great technique to use with delicate fabrics especially when attaching lace trim to items.

Almost Janome sewing machine has a Utility ZigZag Stitch, and you can adjust the width and length to your liking.

Secret Channel on Bottom:

This is a little known feature, or maybe it is well known and I just haven't heard of anyone else using it for this purpose yet. You will have to let me know in the comments if this is something you knew.

On the bottom of the Janome Satin Stitch Foot, and similarly designed Janome Border Guide Foot (FB), the toes are thicker than the rest of the foot which creates this little channel. This is super helpful to allow your decorative stitches move through the foot as you sew them. However, this channel is perfect for helping to guide hems which are under 1/2". I double folded the fabric and placed the fold in the channel on the bottom of the foot, then moved my needle position to where I wanted to stitch the hem down and the foot kept everything nice and straight! Who knew?!

Have I convinced you yet that the Janome Satin Stitch Foot is the bestest? If not, I want to hear about your favourite foot and why you love it!

Stitch On!
