The Swoosh has finally found a spot to open what could likely be their largest store on our island
The Nike hoarding that spans the entire frontage of 268 Orchard Road
Orchard Road appears to be positioning itself to excite. More flagship stores are fronting the city's favourite shopping street. The latest to join the not-quite-a-crowd-yet flagship scene is Nike. A massive hoarding, spanning the entire ground-floor frontage of the building known only by its number—268—has been erected, announcing Nike'a occupation and, by the looks of it, as the complex's largest retail tenant since it opened in 2015. Occupying the smallest plot of land on the shopping belt, the strikingly symmetrical edifice is owned by Ngee Ann Development, which has strangely kept it vacant after Surrender, Christian Dada, and Off-White moved out. It is not known how many levels Nike will occupy, but it appears that it would be immense, probably bigger than their biggest store in Jewel.
Nike's entry into the flagship space on Orchard Road is, in fact, a tad late (to be sure, we're assuming they are building a flagship). In less than a kilometre on either side of its upcoming store, there is already Adidas at Pullman Orchard that the Three Stipes call its Brand Centre, as well as the Puma flagship at 313@Somerset. It is not known if this Nike store will be operated by Nike themselves or by GMG, the Dubai-based retailer and distributor that took over from the Singapore-based SUTL Corporation, originally operator of Nike-only stores—mainly in malls, such as the one at Paragon and the now-closed at Shaw Centre. Regardless, Nike's massive, street-fronting presence, after the new Club 21 on nearby Bideford Road will augur well for what has been insistently touted as "A Great Street".
