Time Around the World
"Life is but a fraction of a second in the history of time, while a photograph is an eternity of time frozen from life."
Conrad Hafenrichter
This week Donna has challenged us to focus on time - a subject with which we are all very familiar. There are so many ways we might approach this one which is, I think, the beauty of it. One might address it with images of clocks seen around the world as above, or in any of the other ways I've featured below, or in a different way entirely. I've decided go with a rather light-hearted approach this week, just for the fun of it. After all, don't we all need to make time for a smile now and then?
Time for a New Phone
"Just because people ...take cellphone pictures it doesn't mean the pictures are meaningful. ..Is it going to inspire us?"
Steve McCurry
Cellphones today are ubiquitous, such that everyone has a camera on hand most all of the time. I don't believe Mr. McCurry (one of my favorite photographers) meant to dismiss the quality or the meaning of such images. Rather, I suspect he is encouraging us to try using them more effectively - to create impactful photographs that will cause people to think, or to reflect, or to appreciate the subjects they portray. I captured the cellphone image below just after the U.S. Labor Day holiday. It's a time when the residents "take back the beach" - when solitude and peace are more easily found (and very much appreciated) after the heat and crowds are both on the decline.
Time To Relax
"I find 'letting it happen' relaxing, a playful vacation. Stimulating pictures almost always result."
Minor White
This spring we had a family visit that included our two young great-nieces. While I believe their favorite moment was being up close (but not TOO close) and personal with our alligators, they also loved the many island features designed for families. Nothing beats the laughter of kids simply enjoying life. For them there's no such thing as income tax, rising prices, unemployment....well you get the idea. We adults could surely benefit from some of those unfettered moments of simple pleasure.
Time to Be A Kid Again
"Kids and amateur photographers are the same - everything new."
Lakshman Iyer
Kiawah's alligators are always a key feature for visitors to our island. The image below features another family visit. That time my brothers were fishing from a dock on the Kiawah River and had their live bait soaking in a bucket. Perhaps the gator thought it would make a nice little appetizer that afternoon
.
Time To Move The Bait Bucket
"There is a fountain inside you. Don't walk around with an empty bucket."
Rumi
On the subject of visitors, I'm reminded of a funny moment when my husband and I visited Scotland. While driving along the roadway I thought the sign in the image below was giving notice of a scenic outlook. Nope, instead it was their way of letting drivers know that cameras were in place to capture those who were NOT taking their time. Bummer!
Time to Slow Down
"Getting photographs is not the most important thing...In our fast-paced modern world, it's a luxury to watch the stars move across the sky."
Michael Kenna
All kidding aside, I'll close this week's post with a serious thought - we never know how much time remains on our personal calendar or clock. We will be remembered one day by those we've inspired, those whose hearts we've touched or those we've helped along the way. Take the time to make sure you'll be remembered as you would hope to be.
Time's Up
"Too often, we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring. All of which have the potential to turn a life around."
Leo Buscaglia
Many thanks to Donna for her very interesting and beautifully crafted challenge. Be sure to check out and link to her post here, and to use the Lens-Artists Tag to appear in our reader. Thanks also to Anne for last week's B&W or Monochrome challenge. We enjoyed seeing your responses, especially as compared to the previous week's Primary Colors challenge. Finally, we're excited to welcome Egidio of Through Brazilian Eyes as our Guest Host next week. Be sure to visit his post next Saturday at noon EST as he challenge us to share the ways we find to RECHARGE. Until then, as always please stay safe, be kind and enjoy the journey.
