Hi, I'm Jenny, I Love First Peoples Sew & Sew program coordinator. Our program equips remote community schools with sewing labs, including quality sewing machines and supplies, so they can teach a valuable life skill through traditional projects in the school setting.
Did you know that Janome Canada sponsors the machines for the I Love First Peoples Sew & Sew program?!
I just received my Janome 2030QDC so that I have an identical machine for demonstrating when supporting teachers via Zoom during the upcoming school year. We are always increasing the support for teachers and volunteers who keep the sewing labs going. On top of sewing machines, we provide tools, notions and materials which are re-supplied every year.
Earlier this week, I traveled to Witchekan Lake Cree Nation to deliver their new sewing machines! This is one of 6 new labs opening this fall across Treaty 6, Treaty 8 and Treaty 10 territories. I am lucky to live and work in Treaty 6 Territory, so Witchekan Lake was within driving range!
Cheryl Thomas is the land-based learning teacher AND sewing mentor extraordinaire! Cheryl has been offering sewing opportunities for grade 4 and up including an after-school program for teens. She has a strong focus on creating ribbon skirts and shirts, tea dresses, jingle dresses and other Pow wow regalia. Her cozy classroom is a revolving door of excited youth, and we couldn't be happier to support her with new equipment for the upcoming school year. When Cheryl reached out, several of the sewing machines at the school were no longer usable so this delivery was very timely!
Our Sew & Sew program can only happen with the dedication of teachers like Cheryl who inspire the youth in their communities every day. They do so much more than teach, they build community around their programs by including elders and aunties who all help to keep the sewing labs going. Cheryl is forever humble, but we see her efforts and all the heart that goes into her work!
Thank you, Cheryl and Janome Canada!
