With only 2 Bak Kut Teh shops in central Kuala Lumpur, it is unsurprising that most tourists only know about Ban Lee or Sun Fong bak kut teh. I was one of those tourists until I was introduced to Ah Sang Bak Kut Teh by a local friend
Located in Sungei Way, PJ area which is about 20 to 30 mins drive away from central KL, Ah Sang is a hidden gem only familiar to locals staying around the area as well as foodies who are serious in hunting down great food. Occupying 2 storefronts, Ah Sang is a humble and unassuming shop sporting old-school furnishings
Opened in 1985, Ah Sang Bak Kut Teh took on the nickname of its owner who has won both the Top 50 Bak Kut Teh and Master Bak Kut Teh award due to their dedication to serving authentic and traditional flavours and keeping the Bak Kut Teh heritage alive. After you order, you can see the staff assembling your Bak Kut Teh at the front of the store since most of the ingredients are pre-cooked
I visited on a Friday morning and I was surprised that Ah Sang was pretty empty. I remember visiting them during the pre-pandemic times and they were always packed. I subsequently found out that they do online booking and delivery which might explain the dip in walk-in customers as people might be ordering delivery. The shop space is very spacious and the cleanliness was well maintained as every table was clean and cleared the moment a customer leaves the shop. It was also airy enough to not feel hot eating soup due to the multiple ceiling and wall fans
Everything here is like a walk in memory lane as we were given this old-school plastic bowl filled with hot water to wash our utensils, plates and dishes
You can choose between white rice or oil rice which is basically rice that is stir-fried with chopped green onion, green onion oil, lard and other ingredients. I chose the oil rice which is much more flavourful and pairs perfectly with the bak kut teh soup
There is only 1 dish available: the bak kut teh served in a clay pot or bowl. The difference between the clay pot and the bowl is the price and ingredients as the clay pot has more ingredients and keeps the soup hot for a longer period. You can order the clay pot for 1 person or 2 people and also choose to add ingredients for an additional cost. I am not really a person who eats bak kut teh with fried fritters so I did not order any during my visit
The soup was bubbling when served to my table and was chocked full of ingredients like beancurd puff, enoki mushroom, pork belly, pork ribs, pig intestines, pig liver as well as green vegetables. The meat was extremely soft and tender and easily comes off the bone and has a nice herbal flavour. When paired with the garlic and chilli, there was an added kick with the herbal pork which was perfect with the oil rice. The soup was very thick and flavourful but the taste of the herbs was not overpowering and did not leave you thirsty
Overall, I love the homely and humble atmosphere at Ah Sang and it is absolutely my favourite Bak Kut Teh shop in Kuala Lumpur. When I have time, I will travel the distance just to eat Ah Sang and not the ones in central KL and I will definitely recommend anyone who is in KL to try them out
