Celebrate your unique, Filipino beauty – whether you're fair, kayumanggi, or morena!

Filipinos come in different shapes, sizes, and colors – making each Filipino beautiful in their own ways. Among the physical attributes that make us distinct from other races is our unique skin tone.

In general, Filipinos have brown skin that ranges from light to dark tones. This skin tone is usually referred to as kayumanggi or morena. While these words may seem interchangeable, they actually have distinct meanings and cultural connotations.

One particular trait of Filipino culture is the value placed on skin color. The privilege of having light skin is highly prized, and this is evident in even in the Filipino beauty industry. The concept of whitening products is common in the country, with skin whitening creams, soaps, and lotions being sold widely.

This phenomenon traces back and is attributed to colonialism, with the Spanish colonizers placing a premium on fair skin as a sign of superiority. This notion of beauty still hints discrimination even in today's time. But now that we are living in a society that is more inclusive, kayumanggi and morena skin are embraced more, whatever gender you are!

Morena and Kayumanggi: What is the Difference?

Morena and Kayumanggi: What is the Difference?

The term 'morena' or 'moreno' is used to describe a medium to deep skin color that is closer to dark brown. This term is commonly used to describe Filipinas with a darker tone or complexion.

On the other hand, 'kayumanggi' is a more neutral term that refers to individuals with brown skin. This term has been used as early as the pre-colonial period, where native Filipinos would use it to distinguish themselves from foreigners. 'Kayumanggi' is often associated with the natural beauty of Filipinos and Filipinas, and is more commonly used in the context of national pride.

Despite the different contextual meanings of these terms, 'morena' and 'kayumanggi' both celebrate the diversity of the Filipino people. It is an expression of the country's multiculturalism and the society's body positivity advocacy. The diversity of skin tone is not something to be ashamed of, but embraced as part of what makes us Filipinos unique.

Morena and kayumanggi skin are both beautiful, and it is essential to embrace it. Filipinos with these skin tones need to take care of their skin in different ways than those with fair skin. Here are some tips that can help Filipinos maintain and enhance their beautiful morena and unique kayumanggi skin.

Embrace whatever natural skin color you are in.

We know it's easier said than done, especially when there are still discriminations regarding one's body and skin color. There is no shame in having morena skin tone. Try to avoid using lightening skin products, as some of it can damage the skin and may cause skin problems like acne, skin irritation, or allergies. Filipinos must embrace their natural skin color – fair, light, morena, and kayumanggi!

Use a tone-adapt sunscreen.

Talking about skin care, sunscreen is a must. People with morena and kayumanggi skin have more natural melanin, protecting them from sunburns and skin damages. However, this doesn't mean that their skin is immune to skin cancer or other sun-related skin problems. Use sunscreen or apply protective clothing when staying long in the sun, to reduce sun damage. Sunscreen can also prevent the aging process and keep skin looking younger and healthy-looking.

Moisturize.

Moisturizing plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy skin - whether you are fair, morena, or kayumanggi. For Filipinos with morena and kayumanggi skin tones, it's best to find the right moisturizer that works best to enhance your 'morena glow'. Moisturizers can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, keeping the skin smooth.

See celebrities like Nadine Lustre, Lovi Poe, Kathryn Bernardo, Iza Calzado, and Gabbi Garcia and how they embrace their morena skin. Let these celebrities encourage you to embrace whatever color you are in and be confident in your own natural, unique beauty!
