After booking my trip to Worthing, I remembered it's where my good friend Tina's son lives. When I talked to her about it, she said she'd come down while I was there and we could spend some time together. It was fantastic to look forward to her company and she also recommended some restaurants, including Pitch.
Chef-owner of Pitch, Kenny Tutt, came to culinary fame when he won the BBC's MasterChef competition in 2018. Until then, he'd spent 20 years working in banking. However, he started cooking from a young age, learning from his Irish mother Lynette, so food had long been a passion. It was his wife Lucy who persuaded him to enter MasterChef. Now he owns Pitch, a fine dining restaurant, Bayside Social, a more relaxed seafront restaurant, and a cookery school in his home town of Worthing.
Tina and I had a lovely long chat over tea in the afternoon when she arrived, enjoying the fabulous view from the large bay window in the flat overlooking the sea.
Then we walked along the seafront for about an hour. The weather during the day had been mainly sunny with odd flashes of rain and very windy. The wind had dropped a lot by late afternoon and it was gorgeous to enjoy the huge expanse of sea and pebbly beach stretching miles. It's very quiet everywhere, I guess because it's low season, and thus very peaceful and relaxing.
Back in the flat we got ready to head off to Pitch - a 12-minute walk according to Maps.
We were very warmly welcomed in the restaurant. It's an attractive restaurant, the decor a kind of gentle, relaxing sophistication.
Menus came quickly, with a carafe of water. We decided we probably only wanted two courses, so a starter and main course. Food chosen, we also both ordered glasses of Picpoul (175ml, £8.75).
We both chose Roasted King Scallops-Granny Smith-kohlrabi-chicken butter (£14) to start.
These were stunning. I actually said 'amazing' after taking my first taste. The sweet scallops were perfectly cooked and the sauce and all the accompaniments superb and beautifully matched.
My choice for main was Roasted Cod-warm tartare-hispi cabbage-salt and pepper pomme Anna (£22). I have to say I wasn't quite sure about the charred effect on the cabbage but it tasted good, though was too large a piece for me to finish. Every other part of the dish though was excellent and I really enjoyed it.
Tina chose Greedy carver chicken breast-grilled leeks-onion mustard-chicken skin mash (£21). It looked great and she said it was very good, though she wasn't sure about the chicken skin on the mash, which was served separately on the side.
We also ordered a side of seasonal vegetables which we were told was tenderstem broccoli with miso butter (£5). It was a generous portion and very good.
It had been a great meal. Excellent food that had interesting and delicious twists. The service was very efficient and friendly. The bill, including wine and tip, came to £106.32 for two.
Happily replete, we took a gentle stroll back along the seafront to the flat - for mint tea and more talking!
