I know the usual narrative is that women should wear nice, cute, and sexy outfits to bed but do you know some of us had to rethink this narrative not because we do not want to look and feel sexy in bed.
Well, now that I have a lot of time today, I want to share this true story that happened to me a few years ago.
So you see, towards the last quarter of the year 2012, one cold night, my sister and I had our supper and then watched a few episodes of the "true crimes" docuseries on discovery ID. We left for bed at around midnight.
At around 2 am, I was startled and woken up by the beaming lights of torches, shining so bright. Those flashlights were indeed blinding.
I sat down quickly on the bed and tried to block the source of the light with my palm.
As I did this, I counted a total of 6 men standing at the door and another one sitting on my bed.
I also scanned a few dangerous weapons idly lying on my immaculately white duvet.
I saw a pistol, a panga with fresh blood on it, a short axe and now a huge AK47 rifle was pointing at my almost bare chest.
I had just seen these weapons from the docuseries and I was fully aware of what could be next...
I wore a "see me through, "extremely sexy", baby pink lace nightgown that was not only quite short but you didn't need to struggle to see whatever you wanted to see.
You see, I had followed the narrative, with my whole heart.
The guy sitting on my bed let out a big sigh. He was like...
oh! my... I didn't know we would find such good stuff here.
He placed the AK47 on the bed and took the pistol and started running it through my chest. I could tell he was filled with lust.
I tried to pull up the covers but honestly speaking, I knew I couldn't do much.
I was also warned not to try to scream as they immediately confiscated my mobile phone.
Well, they asked me a few questions, then proceeded to empty the little amount I had on my MPESA and the cash that was in the house.
Three of the guys went to my sister's bedroom and also stole from her while tormenting her.
I remember she had just bought her new phone a day ago. They took the phone, the charger, and the new earphones.
These guys realized that we were only the two of us in the house, they were therefore not in a hurry.
They warmed food, ate, disconnected the gas cylinder, and took it out. They even ate my bread. From the fridge, they took out some groceries.
They even pulled down all the curtains, bedsheets, the microwave, and all the households they could carry.
They had a small car nearby and they could transfer the goods and then come back to the house to continue tormenting us.
After they had taken all the valuables, they came back to the sitting room and started arguing amongst themselves.
I could hear them saying they cannot leave us just like that. That they didn't expect to find such "ready meat".
Well, by this time, they had brought my sister to my bed and tied both of us by the head of the bed.
Keep in mind what I was wearing...
Well, one of the guys amongst them kept reminding them...
"Guys, we promised hatutafanya hivo, (We won't do this), we came to steal the goods and not harm women". Please remember...
He had the loudest voice and I figured out he must have been their leader or something.
They had a physical fight in my sitting room.
At this time, my mouth was so dry from fear and dread.
My sister and I were not speaking. We couldn't also pray.
We were frozen.
Finally, I heard them stop quarreling and one said, it's almost 5 am, we need to go before the day breaks.
They hurriedly left but not before coming to my bedroom and mocking us...
"Najua mkiambiwa na makarao mtu-identify mtatujua, sindio"? (I know if the policemen asked you to identify us, you would do it easily)? They had unmasked because they had spent so much time in my house.
Miraculously, they left at around 5 am but left a bunch of keys stained with a lot of blood.
I don't want to lengthen this story any further but, it's been like 8 years later and I cannot still manage to sleep with scanty clothing.
Before I wear any nightwear, I have to ask myself a few questions...
Well, Don't start making imaginations of how I sleep.
But My point is, whatever I go to bed with has to be modest.
I know some life experiences tend to shape our lives, either negatively or positively but I think it's something I have to live with.
My sister and I suffered from PTSD for many years.
I couldn't live in a house that has no neighbors nearby and I had a lot of trouble falling asleep.
But, 3 years ago, I was able to break free from the fear of living in my own compound and I am also able to fall asleep quite fast.
The only thing that remains, is the nightwear. It still has to be modest and cover "my basics" well.
