| Adam – 8 year old male Beagle Cross | by Underdog International Dec 27, 2021 | Adam is a 8 year old male Beagle Cross. He is the happiest boy ever and will bring so much joy to a family. He is a Beagle mix from Cyprus and is approximately eight years of age. We think that Adam ended up in the outskirts of the city after the fire in the mountains in Cyprus which displaced a lot of companion animals. He seemed street smart and confident trotting about the roads on his own, so we think he’s used to roaming about as and when he pleases.
Adam found his way literally to the door of one of our rescue partners, and obviously she welcomed him with open arms. He was happy to see people who immediately treated him with kindness and he waltzed in to meet all of her other dogs and cats as though he was an old friend. Adam’s preliminary vet checks showed that he was slightly anaemic but that he was also positive for Leishmania. Leish is a long term health condition caused by the bite of an infected sandfly. It is not transferrable to other dogs in the UK as our weather is too cold for the sandfly in question. With a supportive vet, inexpensive medication and routine bloodwork, Leishmania can be managed well and dogs go on to live a happy to healthy life. Of course, we can provide more information upon request about Leish and Adam’s specific case. Adam has no visible symptoms of Leish and is fit and healthy now that he’s in a foster home, and he’s even being cooked for – spoilt! Although he’s a hound mix, Adam hasn’t shown any issues with the cats he lives alongside, but they keep to themselves and are comfortable around dogs. He plays fantastically with other pups of all shapes and sizes and is a very sociable, friendly and active dog. His best friend is Andrew and he could play with him for hours on end. He loves wriggling about on the sofa, and also likes to stand on the outside table and observe everything from a height, like a little mountain goat. He travels well in the car, he has no issues with meeting new people, and he’s well behaved at the vets. He does pull a bit on the lead but we think it’s because he’s not really used to lead walking, so that’s an area that might need some additional work. Adam is always so happy to have a new person to meet and laps up the opportunity for strokes and cuddles at any given chance, he would make such a wonderful family companion and would love a home with a garden and a fairly active lifestyle. He is such a loving, loyal dog and we’re already feeling envious about whoever gets to welcome this sweet character into their home! | | | Roxy – 8 month old female Cross-Breed | by Underdog International Dec 27, 2021 | Roxy is a 8 month old female Cross-Breed. She was abandoned on the streets as a very young puppy. Unfortunately they were dumped in a spot that often gets street dogs a bad name, as they were based between a school and university, and many of the young people frequenting that area have no idea how to treat dogs with kindness. This often leads to problems as the dogs get teased and antagonised.
After chasing after a bicycle, the locals decided to put a stop to the dogs roaming about near the school and laid out poison (which is a common form of DIY ‘pest control’) in order to kill them. A local rescuer who had already formed a trusting bond with the street dogs had been alerted to their plight at this point and immediately drove to save the pups from what would have been a truly awful death. Tokyo, Roxy and Dante are now safe, off the streets and in the security of a small scale shelter. It took them a while to trust the new people in their lives and who could blame them. On the streets they’d been kicked, chased and had stones thrown at them, so they needed time to be sure their rescuers were going to be kind to them. They were never aggressive in any way, just apprehensive and shy at first. Like her sister, Roxy is also reserved with new people but tends to warm up a little faster than Tokyo. Once she trusts you her confidence sky rockets and she loves to be in human company. She’s also looking for a particularly active family as she’s very energetic when outdoors and always focused on doing a ‘job’. The pups are a mix of Bosnian hunting dog and they do have natural prey drive, so homes without small pets is a must. This is a behaviour that they were bred for, so adopters must be able to offer active homes, semi-rural settings and an outlet for their scenting and chasing instinct that they were born with. They would have a great time on faux scenting trails, specifically designed to keep hounds busy, or with Tug-e-nuff toys! Roxy is excellent with other dogs and would be happy in a home with a resident canine. She finds confidence in the presence of other dogs and loves some rough and tumble with the other shelter dogs outside. She’s not suitable for a home with cats, but has been around children and can be homed with kids aged 6+ as long as they’re quietly confident around dogs. Roxy loves the outdoors and definitely needs a home with a garden too, as she’s never been contained inside a home before and has always had immediate outdoor access. Roxy is now ready to travel to the UK has a clean bill of health. If you think you can offer her the home she needs please get in touch. | | | Tokyo – 8 month old female Cross-Breed | by Underdog International Dec 27, 2021 | Tokyo is a 8 month old female Cross-Breed. Her confidence has already improved and will continue to do so given time and patience. Tokyo is excellent with other dogs and needs a home with a resident canine. She finds confidence in the presence of other dogs and loves nothing more than to play, and play, and play. She’s an active dog and would do best with another energetic pup to befriend. If you think you can offer him the home he needs please get in touch. | | | Kesley – 9 month old female Italian Segugio Cross | by Underdog International Dec 23, 2021 | Kesley is a 9 month old female Italian Segugio Cross Kelsey is a beautiful young dog with a gentle, submissive nature, and she’s looking for a patient and understanding family who can help her gain confidence and reach her full potential. She was picked up as a stray and brought into the pound in poor condition. She was very underweight and notably skittish, so who knows what she had been through before she was rescued.
Kelsey is thought to be a Segugio Italiano mix, of which can be shy around new people. Although she arrived as a ball of nerves, Kelsey’s confidence has been improving significantly in the time she’s been at the pound and in a proper household where she has stability, security and love around her all the time we think she will blossom. She just needs time. She’s already recently discovered that she loves a scratch behind the ears and under the chin, and she’s always so gentle when interacting with people. Kelsey is only around nine months old and still has a lot of puppy energy to burn. She absolutely loves to play out in the yard and has a great time with the other pound dogs – watching her play bow and wriggle about to get their attention is heartwarming. She would most definitely prefer a home with another resident dog who can help to boost her confidence and show her the ropes. Learning to live as a companion dog rather than a pound dog can be overwhelming and scary to begin with, so Kelsey would appreciate a resident dog to learn from, play with and who’s there to reassure her. She also loves having loads of toys to choose from and likes picking her favourites out from the toy basket and scattering them about the yard. Kelsey’s ideal home would be in a semi-rural setting away from any busy roads or loud, constant noises. She needs a home with a secure garden, and someone who enjoys a fairly active lifestyle. Being a hound, she will enjoy using her nose to explore, so her new adopters must be aware that recall training will take time and she should be on a long lead until her nervousness has improved and she has a strong bond with her new family. She would prefer a home without cats or children, and someone who is willing to work on her training as well as building her confidence steadily. Given the chance, Kelsey will grow to be such an affectionate, fun loving and loyal young dog. She is ready to travel to the UK in January. | | | Kipper – 2 year old male Maltese Cross | by Underdog International Dec 23, 2021 | Kipper is a 2 year old male Maltese Cross He may be small but he’s a character! He was found as a stray and brought to the pound by a local animal lover who wanted a better life for him. Since he arrived his personality has grown each and every day and despite being the tiniest pound resident he likes to think that he’s the boss!
Kipper loves attention and would 100% make the perfect companion for someone who’s looking for a small dog who they intend to make the centre of their universe. He loves to sit on your knee and enjoys a head and shoulder massage, but has something to say about it if you stop stroking him before he’s had enough! He’s only around two years old and he has a lot of energy when he’s exercised in the yard, so we think he would benefit from a home with a garden to run around in and someone who enjoys walking. Kipper has been fine with the other dogs at the pound but because he’s so small he can get overwhelmed by bouncy, energetic characters coming bounding towards him. He doesn’t like to be bothered until he’s ready, and will instigate play on his own terms. When he does play with other dogs though he seems to have a great time and loves chasing Kelsey around. However, in a home setting we think Kipper would be best suited as the only prince of the household, or with another dog of a similar size to him with a passive nature. In the right home we’re confident that Kipper will thrive, but he won’t be the right match for everyone environment despite being the small and cute dog that we know so many people are keen to adopt. He needs a home with a family confident dealing with rescue dogs, and without young children. He needs time to adjust to being a part of a new family and therefore someone with patience and understanding is a must. Kipper has shown us how quickly he can bond with humans once shown love, so we know with an adopter who can give him that all day every day, he will be a very devoted little companion who will bring a lot of joy into someone’s life. Kipper is ready to travel to the UK in January. | | | Ava – 2 year old female Hound Cross | by Underdog International Dec 23, 2021 | Ava is a 2 year old female Hound Cross She was brought to the pound by a family who no longer wanted her. She was heavily pregnant and if they didn’t want to keep her there was no way they were going to look after her puppies. A few days after she arrived, Ava gave birth to a healthy litter of seven puppies in the shelter, of whom all have now been successfully adopted into homes in the UK. Now it’s Ava’s turn.
Unlike her pups who must have inherited their dad’s slim frame and delicate build, Ava is a big girl, around the size of a Labrador. She is incredibly loving, well meaning and friendly, and loves to make friends with anyone and everyone who visits the shelter. She’s very enthusiastic with her greetings and loves to jump up to say hello. She means absolutely no harm and everything she does is in the name of affection. Ava was a great mother to her pups and raised them to be trusting, sociable and confident little dogs. She would play with them, but keep them in check if they were getting too boisterous. However, when the spotlight was on her she was more than happy to be fussed over and loved it when the attention was shared out among them all. Ava is great with other dogs and has no issues with any of the other shelter residents. She can be a bit goofy and clumsy when over-excited, and we’d therefore suggest she’s adopted into a home with older children who won’t be overwhelmed by her size – she could quite easily accidentally knock over a little child without meaning to. She would also enjoy living alongside a dog of a similar size to her, rather than a very small dog who might feel intimidated by her. She likes to play and would enjoy an active companion. Ava would be best suited to a home outside of the city with a garden. She would benefit from some basic training classes, but has such a trusting, loyal nature that it won’t take her long to pick up new things and learn where she slots into her new family. She desperately wants to have her own humans to dote on her, take her for long walks and show her a sense of belonging that she’s never had before. Ava will be ready to travel to the UK in January. | | | Daisy – 7 month old female Jack Russell Terrier Cross | by Underdog International Dec 23, 2021 | Daisy is a 7 month old female Jack Russell Terrier Cross She and her siblings were surrendered to a local rescue after their mother tragically passed away during their birth. Because of this the puppies had to be hand reared, and now at the age of almost four months old they’re ready to find their forever homes. Because they were raised by a couple living rurally, the pups aren’t hugely socialised and they will need a patient, understanding family to help them gain confidence. Of the three, Daisy is the most shy.
We believe the pups to be Jack Russell mix puppies, although their ears suggest there could be a little bit of hound in the genes. Daisy takes the longest the trust new people and when first meeting new people she can be quite scared. She’s super submissive and will never act aggressively, but she really needs a gentle, patient adopter who can help her gain confidence. With those she trusts she’s so loving and sweet, and when she’s comfortable it’s wonderful to watch her play in the garden and interact with the other dogs. She certainly finds comfort in the presence of other pups so we’ll only be considering homes with resident dogs to ensure she’s not overwhelmed and has the best chance of settling successfully. Daisy is looking for a home outside of the city with a calm home environment to help her confidence build as she adapts to a companion lifestyle. She’s a tiny little girl and will remain small in size as an adult too, but once she finds her feet her more active nature will surface so she would like a home with a garden and someone who enjoys the outdoors. She won’t be confident enough for walks for a while we imagine, but when she is we think she will love the opportunity to explore with her new family. Daisy is an intelligent breed mix and will thrive with some training. This will also improve her trust bond with her new adopters, and we think she will pick new things up really quickly. Once she’s forged a relationship with a person she’s very devoted to them, but she just takes a little time to suss you out and make sure you’re going to be kind to her. Daisy will be ready to travel in January.

| Fortuna, California | by Barbara Dec 27, 2021 | It was a dark and stormy night before we left Winchester Bay, Oregon, to head south yesterday. We were staying in a private RV park this time around, but we've stayed at the county park across the way. There's a reason the county park is named "Windy Cove." Sheesh. It made sleeping difficult being pelted by heavy rains and occasional big gusts of wind that rocked the trailer. It was just as well we only planned for one night there. The kitties were completely settled in yesterday morning, getting comfortable in their window hammocks.
We really hated to disturb Sadie, she was looking so peaceful.
We got off around 9:30 a.m. yesterday morning. Aside from the wind at the campground, it was smooth sailing.
Had we not left home when we did, it would have looked like this at our house. This image was taken by the neighbor just below our house.
It might not look like a lot of snow to those of you who live with snow all winter, but it would have been difficult to tow our fifth wheel up the steep hill of our driveway to the main public road above.
At the valley floor, Erik and Mae sent us this one from their back yard.
Okay, so heading south...when one travels this section of the Oregon coast highway, one passes by Oregon's cranberry bogs. The cranberries have been harvested now. In any case, I couldn't get a good picture as we sped by. I found this image on Creative Commons, taken by another photographer.

It's a cantilever bridge that spans the Coos Bay on U.S. Route 101 near North Bend, Oregon. When completed in 1936 it was named the North Bend Bridge. In 1947 it was renamed in honor of Conde B. McCullough who died May 5, 1946. This and 10 other major bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway were designed under his supervision. It replaced ferries that had formerly crossed the bay. The bridge is outstanding for its attention to form and detail, and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its design and cultural and economic importance. And if, like me, you don't know what it means to be a "cantilever bridge," you can read all about it right here. And I'll just say that I read all about it, and I still don't understand it.
We encountered the first snow just south of Coos Bay.
It got worse as we drove along, and we were in and out of it several times on our journey south. I wish the weather had been better because this portion of the Oregon/California coastline is stunningly beautiful. Sadly, the pictures I'm about to show you are mainly shades of gray. For a good part of the day I was shooting through a rain-speckled windshield, and so the pictures are really terrible. Still, I'm hoping you'll enjoy seeing what we saw.
It was an angry ocean, for sure.
The image below gives me an opportunity to tell you that, in Oregon, if there are no signs posted that prohibit overnight camping, anyone can just pull off to the side of the road and sleep for free. You can see one such camper there at the foot of that big sea stack.
After about an hour and a half, we crossed the border into California, where the weather was not even a smidge better than it was in Oregon.
It was nice to drive among the redwoods. Again, these are terrible pictures, but use those street signs for scale. These are some big effing trees.
We stopped here at Wilson Creek Beach. It's a beautiful beach on the Northern California coast. Maybe on another trip, I'll be able to show it to you on a sunny day. (You can also see better pictures at that link I gave you.) Looking north, it looked like this:
Here's a pano of the whole beach, and that might give you a better idea.
Continuing on, we encountered the most snow as we passed through the Redwood State and National parks.
We were also concerned about big wind gusts in places like the one pictured below. Fortunately, wind was never a problem.
And we made it to Fortuna without incident. We're here for the next two nights for a little R&R after such a hectic week getting ready to leave. We want to make a quick trip to the grocery store. I realized I'm missing some pantry items, I usually keep on hand. Also, when I registered at the RV park office, they handed me a sheet listing some local businesses. And what to my wondering eyes should appear?
It's less than two miles from here! It's almost as if it were meant to be, isn't it? Well. Let's just say we don't ignore these kinds of messages from the Universe.
As for the kitties...they are snug. I'm always marveling at what good travelers they are. This morning, they are demonstrating their function as kitty bookends.
Mike remarked that they live in three universes: home, the fifth wheel, and the truck camper. They have their own routines and territories marked out in each space. Just tell them where we are today, and they're good to go.
So that's all I have for you. We may stay home, or we may go out and run those couple of errands: groceries and fabric. Oh yes, and we need to fill our propane bottles. Not sure what we'll do yet. It's raining as I'm writing this. I'm glad we're south of the snow, but it would be nice to see some sunshine too. Each year, I have to remind myself that it is winter all over the northern hemisphere. We can run, but we cannot hide.
