The tendency to work from home has increased in the post-COVID-19 world, with various organisations encouraging employees to work from their respective places of stay. Although this policy has many advantages, it also has various disadvantages. According to Doctors, there is an increase in the number of patients with spinal problems in recent times. Also, there is another serious issue. Researchers have claimed that work from home has increased male infertility, mainly because of over-usage of laptops.

It can crudely be mentioned in a nutshell that the sperm count of those, who keep laptops on their laps most of the day, is rapidly declining. Yelim Sheynkin, an Urologist at the State University of New York, has stated in his research paper that temperature of the testicles rises as a result of keeping the laptop on the lap for a longer period, leading to male infertility. The Urologist is of the opinion that the majority of men don't even realise how little time it takes for a hot laptop to affect the area. For specific production levels to be sustained, the area needs to be kept cool. However, when a hot laptop is applied, it changes everything. "Millions and millions of men are using laptops now, especially those in the reproductive age range. Within 10 or 15 minutes, the temperature is already above what we consider safe, but the men don't feel it." stressed Sheykin.

Sheynkin and his co-researchers reportedly used thermometers to measure 29 male participants, as each of whom was tasked with balancing a notebook PC on their laps. As per the study published in a medical journal, they conducted the study on three types of work methods:

1) Working with knees close together and a laptop on the lap;
2) Sitting with both knees close together, and keeping working with the laptop on the lap; and
3) Spreading the two knees around 70 degrees, and placing the laptop on a pad kept on the lap.

While the temperature of testicles increased 2.56 degrees within 11 minutes in the first case, it rose 2.18 degrees in 14 minutes in the second case, and 1.47 degrees in the third case.

The researchers, then, have come to the conclusion that keeping a laptop on lap reduces the sperm count of men, leading to male infertility. At the same time, they have claimed that working in a laptop placed on a table can help men avoid this problem. Even when participants were asked to extend their legs wide apart so as to limit the amount of concentrated heat, it took only about 30 minutes for the affected area to reach a worrisome heat level. "No matter what you do, even with the legs spread wide apart, the temperature is still going to be higher than what we call safe," stressed Sheynkin.

It seems that the changing work culture would hinder the progress of Human Civilisation in the near future.
