Wow! 20 years have now passed since the deadliest terrorist attack on US soil happened. 3,000 people were killed that day when 19 hijackers from the Al Qaeda Network hijacked 4 planes and flew them into the World Trade Center Buildings in New York City and another into the Pentagon Building. And the 4th Plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.
I was 9 years old in 2001. I turn 30 in January 2022. I was in school that day and I didn't see the news until I came home. My school did not tell us kids what was happening. I was in 4th Grade.
I did not understand what was happening that day and why it was happening. As the months went on my grandma and mom began explaining things more to me to make sense of what had happened. I was told about Radical Islam. I watched the US Invasion of Afghanistan on Television.
It was a horrible day that shocked the nation. And our country has never been the same since.
20 years later looking back, the response to the 9/11 Attacks marked the erosion of privacy and civil liberties for the American People from their own Government. One month after the 9/11 Attacks, Congress passed the Patriot Act in October 2001
The Patriot Act increased US Government Surveilance on the American Public. Since then all our phone conservations and messages are watched by the government. All on-line activity is monitored by the Government. All done in the name of security and protection from terrorists. It is not surprising how it has been abused by the US Government. Most of the American Public did not even know about it until whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked the story in 2013.
20 years later we are dealing with all kinds of mandates related to the Covid-19 Pandemic including business closures and forcing to get a vaccine. All in the name of protection.
Our biggest fear in 2001 was the Al Qaeda network destroying our country and taking away all our freedoms. And since the past 20 years, it has been our own US Government taking it away and creating a surveilance state.
In another post I will be talking about a retrospective on the 20 years of the war on terror.
