It is human nature to think that everything that we do is good, but is it really? How can we judge when our point of reference is firmly grounded in our sinful nature? We see the world through our sins and we judge anyone who sins differently than us while we ignore our own sins. We see ourselves as better than everyone else simply because we are familiar with our particular sinful nature. What we fail to realize is that our sin is just as bad in the eyes of the Lord as the sins that we look down upon. Contrary to what we may think, we are no better than anyone else. In God's eyes, we are all the same.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

In arrogance, King Belshazzar of Babylon took the things that had been consecrated for use in the temple in Jerusalem and he used them to toast false gods. He took what had been dedicated to God and by doing what he did, he insulted God by saying that the false gods were superior. Imagine if someone went into your house and used your prized possessions to insult you. By doing what he did, Belshazzar showed complete contempt for the Lord. Unlike the sins that can be considered as simply missing the mark established by God, Belshazzar deliberately mocked God. He deliberately insulted God! He refused to recognize the authority and power of the Lord and by so doing, his arrogance led to God's judgment upon himself.
Due to our sinful human nature, we can all be prone to ego and pride. We can easily do something completely stupid, and to be honest with you, most of us probably have. We must never do things out of arrogance to God. I can think of a few instances when arrogance has led to God's wrath. Satan wanting to be God. Humanity building the Tower of Babel to reach God, and Belshazzar, who insulted God. This is not good company to be associated with. The basic premise of these examples is that each of them exalted themselves to the point of attempting to be above God. They tried to reverse the order of God's creation and were found wanting.
When the Lord looks at you, will you be found wanting?
